Brutally hot day today, and the first day I've sailed in almost two weeks. A slow wind month and working on a new windsurfing trailer conspired against me to kill any potential sailing in there.
It was a windy day, and since I was a bit unfamiliar with Oso Bay, I rigged too big. In the lulls I was okay, but in the gusts I was just getting massacred. I did okay, though. It's weird... 8 years of no sailing and I picked it back up a pretty well, but two weeks of no sailing and some speed and 18 inches of chop were scary again.
After awhile I was comfortable, but the first ten minutes was hairy. I wore myself out, though, in a short time. Very overpowered at times. I worked only on jibes today, everthing else was secondary. I think I learned a few things -- I hit some pretty ones, and had a few more that were close to disaster but saved. The rest were on-the-edge-of-the-cliff and crashes. Overpowered jibing really isn't that bad, because you have so much power to get you through, you can make big mistakes. Of course, the extra power might contribute to the mistakes, too.
After sailing I stopped by Grassy Point to say hi to some friends. I haven't sailed with anyone for about three weeks, so I was getting lonely. I definitely didn't move here to sail solo, but Oso was the right call. Grassy had some serious weeds and it's lonely and somewhat offshore on the Bay.
