I decided to head to Bird Island today, to round out the "tour" of Grassy's Playground and Oso. Maybe tomorrow or Friday it will be the Bay. BIB wasn't very good today -- at least not by standards of the last couple of days. It was a very up and down 6.6 day. Any sail would have worked for about the same amount of time... the 7.8 would have been good for some times, but tough in the gusts and nothing in the lulls (NOTHING would have worked in the down-to-zero-for-ten seconds lulls). The 6.6 was okay at times, but I was slogging a lot, and coming off of two fully to well-overpowered days back to back, and that on a 5.4 and 4.7, it was very uneventful. There was also very little chop so it wasn't really as much fun, either. I couldn't try a ton of jibes, which I wanted to do, because I'd bear off a lot trying to get planing, and when I finally did, I'd have to point to get back away from the leeward islands I'd otherwise jibe into. I did manage a few decent jibes, but it was a tiring slog fest. I did take a run across to the other side of the Intracoastal Waterway with Mike M., and that was fun. There is more chop out there, but it was only 6.6 wind, so it wasn't much. Plus, the 6.6 is noticeably harder to deal with than the 4.7. I could stand being overpowered on the 4.7 a lot easier than I could on the 6.6. I have been feeling a little awkward at times out there -- out of balance, etc. So during my break today I trimmed about an inch and a half of plastic off of my harness lines and tightened it all up about three or four inches (they were loose). This got me more into the harness without having to extend my arms as much. Seemed to help when I went back out, though I got catapulted a few times because of it. All in all just "one of those days." I was aggressive and looking forward to sailing, but the wind just wasn't there. Better than nothing, though. I think I need to stick closer to town and sail some of the "local" spots more often. The wind nearer to town seems stronger and more consistent. | ||
