After spending the whole morning texting the wind stations to find the best wind in the peninsula, Ulrich and I ended up at the Strand (our closest sea spot) on a hope and a prayer. When we arrived the average was hovering somewhere between 10 and 15 knots. Darren arrived as well and pointed out that there are white horses on the horison -- so wind was on its way. He went out on a 6m and 130 litre board. I betted the other way and rigged a 7.6m, had a run out and back to re-rig -- then instead of going 6.5m I rigged down to 5.7m and rather waited a little for the wind to pick up further. Darren came out reporting that he saw a large shark cruising below his board at the point -- his first sighting in False Bay whilst boardsailing. He sailed almost to Macassar before he dared a gybe! I was initially underpowered on the 5.8m and had some setup issues, because I used a boom I don't usually sail with this sail; my harness-lines were never quite dialled. Struggling to point high, I also had the annoying presence of kiters as there was vitually no swell, so they cruised right to the reef. Later I was well-powered and managed to stay on the board through a couple of gybes. The Wolf had a great session - a first for him at the Strand. I rate this 6, because I had to re-rig -- absolutely hate that. | ||
