I headed to Oleander Point around 2pm, after attending a nice Christmas luncheon at the nursing home. A dear friend now lives there and she really enjoyed having so many visitors. As I approached Oleander Point, the palm trees were swaying and people were rigging and a couple of guys were already on the water. They weren't ripping, but hey - the forecast was good. With 25 knots on my mind, I rigged my 5.2 with a lot of downhaul. There was some "sucker" wind on the inside and I headed out, but quickly realized I needed to let off the downhaul. I turned, fell and barely got a water start. No problem I thought, I'll just let off the downhaul and show 'em how it's done (says the light wind windsurfing masterette). I let off the downhaul and headed back out. This time the plan was to go way out, past the wind shadow that is a known factor at Oleander Point. The wind got worse, not better. I was pretty far out and decided I had better turn around. I fell in and this time there wasn't enough wind to waterstart. I tried and tried and then I tried to uphaul but trying to stand on that small board with the big rollers rocking it made standing for uphaul impossible. Wave of panic. I lay in the water with my sail positioned for a water start and prayed to God as I drifted farther downwind. I was looking across at the Kids Place in Cole Park as I was trying to figure out where I was going to float to if I couldn't get back up on the board. I asked God to please give me enough wind to get up and I would go home to my babies - and there it came - a little puff - just enough to get a waterstart - THANK YOU GOD!!! -- I'm going home! The goal now is to get back to the shore and I don't care if it's blowing 20 knots when I get back, I'm going home. I made it back - slowly - and had to walk a ways to the launch. Worst session of the year. Divine intervention - a 10! Nova & Pepper (my babies) were really happy mommie came home early.
When the wind dies while you're out in Corpus Christi Bay, you've got problems. When the wind dies at Bird Island, you've got a long walk. By the time I got back, the other windsurfers (3 or 4 guys) were already derigging.
