Easterly at Stevenson today. Got out there early
and there was a big wind shadow at Bob's beach,
so drove upwind a bit to the end of the
waterfront road.
It was hard to judge exactly how strong the wind
was from shore. The dock was making all kinds
of noise and smaller folk were coming in on
4.x's, but I wanted to have a chance of staying
upwind on my small board, so rigged a 5.5.
Lucky for me because when I entered the water
the wind had dropped a bit.
I was pretty comfortably powered for the session,
got nice some jibes, never out of control,
using the swell to keep up speed, etc. But
that means I wasn't exactly zipping upwind.
Actually it was pretty apparent early on I
would not be able to keep up with the current,
so I just forgot about it and decided to come
in at Bob's.
I had a great time out there for maybe two
hours. A barge on the horizon sent me into
a downwinder for Bob's and that was my day.
The wind actually picked up a bit more midday
but I had stuff to do. By the time I was done
it was slacking off and folks were drifting
downriver to the railroad bridge. Better safe
than sorry!
