I have a goal of sailing nine local launches at least twice this spring, and it's going well so far. I've sailed four times since I've been back on the water from ear surgery and at four different spots. This time it was Oleander Point, a good bump and jump spot on Corpus Christi Bay. I've sailed there a couple of times before, but this was my best day by far.
I arrived about 3pm and saw what guys were blasting on, so I rigged my 4.1 Sailworks and my F2 Wave (96 liters, but my smallest board). After a couple of runs, I rigged up to my 4.7. It was better, but hard to control, so I came in, moved the mast track all the way forward, put more downhaul and outhaul in, and lowered the boom two inches. BOOM! What a difference. Where before I was tail walking and spinning out constantly, now I was in control and able to have some fun, and it was a blast. I'd not had a good day like this at Oleander before. It wasn't perfect but I know better what I can handle and how to sail in decent chop. It was a lot of fun. There were probably 12 or 15 sailors out, most if not all better than I was. It was a good time.
I had a chance to use two fins I've never used before, too. One is a very small wave fin (23 cm, the smallest I've ever used), and the other is an old 10" Angulo wave fin. Both worked well. I don't think I could tell the difference, in that kind of chop, anyway. But, I know more about my gear now, and more about my abilities, and I'm psyched to go out again! That could be tomorrow, as it's supposed to blow all week.
