It's been a bit frustrating lately. My Dad came to town last Tuesday and left today and in between it was rainy and cold almost the entire time. Today, after I took him to the airport, sure enough sunshine, 75 degrees and 15-20 mph SE wind. The water temp was 69, which was very comfortably warm. I wasn't sure last week when it was cold how cold 52 degrees is (it dropped from 74 degrees to 52 degrees in the Laguna in about 30 hours!), so I vowed to start paying attention to the water temps, as well as wind speed and air temps. 69/75 is definitely shortie weather. It was nice. A little warmer and the shortie would have been quite optional, too.

I got an email from Dick Ward and John Boswell, both of whom where going to head to Grassy Point. I joined them about 1:45. Several other sailors were there, too, Pete from California, Bob the sail repair guy, Oliver of Cline Street Sailboards (kiting on his day off) and Mike, who John and I have frequently sailed with at Bird, but who I haven't seen recently. He said it's lonely now that John and I started sailing at Grassy.

Several sailors were in full suits, though two were sleeveless. I think the psychological effect of the cold temps last week made them think it was colder than it was.

Full suits were needed, though, because there were cabbage heads everywhere. I made sure I didn't fall in on one to the extent where I didn't fall in at all. I was still pretty agressive, but not to the point of wipeouts. I'm told they don't sting too badly and you have to fall right on one, but I didn't want to test it out. I've never seen any kind of jelly fish in the Laguna.

I sailed my 7.8 in wind that iwindsurf.com says was 15-21. I just received my new (to me) 17.5" weed fin from a guy over the Internet. It worked great. I was planing more than most were, which is a big reversal. Usually I'm not planing as much as everyone else. The 2 extra inches (5 cm) of fin sure helped. I was catching a lot of weeds in the gap between the point and the board, though, but I fixed it first thing when I got home tonight. Should be even better next time, which might be tomorrow if the forecast holds.
