I knew it was going to be a light wind day, but I had purchased a Windglider to see if the kids would like to try, and so we went out anyway -- all of us. It's the first time I've had company from my family windsurfing, and we had a good time.
Despite the presence of a 9 year old girl who could windsurf, who I thought would improve the chances of my step-kids wanting to be good at it, they didn't. They both tried it once, said "Whatever" and played on some boogie boards we brought along.
So, $299 down the tubes... -- hold the presses! My wife wanted to try (she has shown little interest in windsurfing beside the fact she's happy I'm happy doing it). So, we go out and she did great! She really seems to take it as a challenge -- which you have to do at this point because it doesn't get fun until you've gotten the basics down and the only way to get the basics down is to stick with it and the only way to stick with it is to ... take it as a challenge.
We'll get a real board for her, though, as the Windglider, despite the ads that show adults, is clearly not made for adults at all, or kids for that matter. It's a totally awful product and I wouldn't recommend ANYONE getting one. It would be SO much better to buy a real kids rig (think small -- 1.5 or so, and lightweight! for the kids), and plunk it on any board you have, rather than getting the Windglider (http://www.windglider.com/). Just my opinion.
I didn't get any planing rides, but I fooled around on the Seatrend and the 6.5. Even the guy on the 10.5 wasn't planing much, but was once-in-awhile. A few light women were planing on 8.0's, but they had the technique, too. I gotta get out there again! I'm getting withdrawal! I was sick during the early part of the week, when it blew, and now it's just 5 days of iwindsurf's inaccurate 10-14 forecast (translation 2-8).
