I didn't see any large schools of stingrays today. Turns out what I saw last time was an aggregate of cownose stingrays, which travel in groups usually. They can sting, but aren't known to be aggressive. They also aren't the type that bury themselves in the sand, so stepping on them isn't as big of a problem. However, a big wipeout into a mess of them probably wouldn't be fun, nor would hitting a group of them!
I went to Bird Island because my friends were heading there. I was jealous because they sailed on the bay yesterday when it was 22-25 and got some rough water sailing in. I couldn't go because my car was in the shop, and they didn't want to go back today. I don't like to sail by myself on the bay, for safety reasons, so I went to Bird, which was pretty fun.
I was on my 6.6 and mostly planing, though not entirely powered. The wind was North, which makes it a bit choppier, though nothing major. I felt off again, probably because it had been almost two weeks since I sailed my Carve and 6.6.
The wind was just shy of powered up so I had trouble jibing. At first I couldn't figure out why but then I realized that I was jibing like I was overpowered, which I usually am, but I didn't have enough wind to do that. I had a few decent jibes, but many were stall-outs because of the lightish wind.
In a North the chop lines up around this one island and bends around so you can hit in almost head on. It's not huge -- 18 - 24 inches, but they are steep enough to jump off of and I should have been able to get some decent jumps but I can't. I don't know why, but this inability to jump well is really bugging me. I think I'm being aggressive enough. I'm TRYING, but I just can't seem to do it. I'm sure I have enough ramp, but they aren't huge swells. Sigh.
