I was just at Grassy Point and it was onshore, a N, and I went out (blowing about 12-14). I tacked upwind about 50 yards then headed out toward Pita, still pinching and slogging. I saw a big flurry of activity in the water ahead and upwind... more than just a fish jumping, so I kept my eyes peeled on the area. About 30 seconds later I ran into a bunch of skates or rays... don't know which. They were 2-3 feet across - pretty big - and there were at least six -- I saw that many. I startled them and they swam along with me for about 15 seconds before they disappeared. I kept going for a minute, then tacked and headed back to the launch. As I was heading back, I saw a skate/ray or small shark (I think it was the former), laying on it's back, snout out of the water, like it was getting some sun. I thought it must be dead, but after jibing, I looked back and it was gone. Plus, I looked for it when I got to shore. Since it was an onshore breeze and not far from the launch I think if it were dead, it would have kept washing in. If it was a fish, it was a big one, but it looked like a skate/ray on it's back. If not that, it was a small hammerhead, which I doubt.

It spooked me, though, and since it was marginal and I went out to do some light-air freestyle and get wet, I packed it in and came home instead.
